Description
高さ5～6mとなり、幹は地上で数本に分枝し、地際は扁平に広がる。葉は幅の細い直線状で、長さ50～70cm、先端はとがるが、針状にならず、ふれても痛くない。花茎はやや短く長さ40～60cm、総状花序は直立する。花は垂れ、白色で中央アメリカの人々はこれを食用とするらしい。
観葉植物として一般的に『青年の木』の愛称で流通。葉に縦に美しい模様の入った種類は、斑入りユッカ（ホワイトユッカ）と呼んで流通している。耐寒性があるため、西洋風の庭に庭園樹として使用されている。
