Description
ヤツデの葉に似ているが、薄い膜質で6～9月に中裂する。葉の裏面には白色綿毛がある。花は晩秋に枝の先に出て、球状の散形花序に多数の帯黄緑白色の花が付き、それらがさらに円錐状に集まって複合花序をつくる。3，4年生の幹からとれる髄を丸通草といい、コルク、包装材、敷物に利用する。これを圧搾したものが通草紙で、造花の材料や短冊などに使う。
別名ツウソウ（通草）、ツウダツボク（通脱木）。日本南部の暖地では観賞用庭園植栽が可能。成長が迅速で雄大な草姿が特徴的で、花も見事。日当りの良い湿潤土壌を好む。関東以南では冬季に地上部が枯れるが、地下部保護により毎年萌芽し、夏期までに十分な大きさに成長する。増殖方法は実生または株分け。
