Description
半低木で高さ2～10m、葉はほぼ卵形の小葉3枚からなり、小葉は長さ10～15cmくらい、葉柄および中央脈にも往々1～2のとげがある。花は鮮紅色ないし暗桃赤色で、花は6～11月頃まで咲き続ける強健な植物である。別名カイコウズ（海紅豆）。
明治時代中頃に日本に渡来し、街路樹や公園樹としても利用されている。太い幹や枝が容易に切れるので管理は比較的簡単。新梢先に花をつけるため、花後に剪定（切り戻し）をすると年に数回開花させることもできる。
