茎は地上に直立し、高さ7～8mとなり、先端に多数の大きな葉を放射状につける。茎の表面を取り巻く気根の層は発達が悪く、○に八の逆の模様状の葉痕が、らせん状に並ぶ。
別名モリへゴ、アヤヘゴ。
