Description
7～9月頃、高さ50～80cmになる太くてやや扁平な花茎の頂端に10～20花をつける。花披は白色、筒部の長さは7～10cm、裂片は樋状で細長く、開出する。夜中に開花し、強い芳香を放つ。雄しべは長さ5.5cm、花糸の基部は花筒喉部に合生し、上部は紫色となる。
別名ハマオモト。種子は円形で長さ幅とも2～2.5cm、珠皮を欠き、海水に浮く。日本の年平均気温15℃線以南に分布するため、この等温線をハマオモト線と呼んでいる。
