Description
葉柄が弧状に外側に湾曲してそり返る。大きな羽状複葉で葉の下面が帯灰緑色となり、全体が白っぽく見える。雌雄同株。果実は食用になる。羽状葉のヤシではもっとも耐寒性が強い種類で、－8℃でも異常がない。零下20℃でも枯死しないと言われる。
ヤタイヤシ（Butia yatay）とブラジルヤシ（Butia capitata）は非常に似ていて見分けが付かない程だが、葉の長さがヤタイヤシの方が若干長く、ブラジルヤシの方が葉柄の基部が長期間残りやすい。果実はヤタイヤシの方が少し大きく、色はブラジルヤシは橙色で、ヤタイヤシは橙色でも少し赤みが強い。日本で生産しているこの種は、交配してできてる物が多く、純粋な物は殆ど無く、厳密に区別する事が難しい。日本の植木業界では、この両種を通称『ココスヤシ』と呼んで流通させている。
