Description
樹上や岩石などに着生する常緑多年生シダで、長さ1～1.5mの大きい単葉全縁の厚い葉を放射状に出し、全体としてカップ状の葉叢をつくる。このカップにたまった落ち葉は腐植となり、この中に根を張って樹上に大きなマスをつくって生活する。地生で育てる事もできる。又、室内でも充分生育できる。
シマオオタニワタリはオオタニワタリと異なり、胞子のうの集まりが葉裏の先端1/3ぐらいの部分に葉幅の1/2程度の幅でつくこと、および新葉が1枚づつ順に開いていくことが特徴である。
